Positive reviews

  • Outstanding hotel with amazing views of the fells. Staff were fantastic. Food was unbelievable!!
  • Famtastc breakfast, great selction, all fresh produce. Lovely staff.
  • Beautiful location. Our suite and the communal areas are beautifully presented with just the right level of mixture of modern comforts and cozy English countryside. The artwork around the hotel is very engaging and interesting. The food is delicious and presented also as work of art.
  • Found a little gem. From the location to the staff, everything was just perfect. Excellent location, Windermere view point from the hotel patio is just unexpected. The staff is so attentive, approachable and very friendly.
  • This hotel is sublime. The attention to detail, the cleanliness and comfort, the professionalism of the staff, the decor, the grounds, the food – all exceptional. A sophisticated hotel with a quiet luxury that allows you to feel indulged but also relaxed and comfortable. Every single person we met who worked there was polite, friendly and helpful. The management should be very proud of their staff. We felt very well cared for and refreshed and we are already looking to rebook.

Negative reviews

  • The walk up the hill to our suite after dark is not well lit.
  • My only complaint would be the road up to the hotel. It was extremely narrow, and it was not clear I was in the right place initially. It was very difficult to manage the road when another car was coming from the opposite direction.
  • It's always nice if there is an easily accessible sauna, hot tub etc
  • The room was on the small side given the amount paid for it.
  • Access to public transport , we needed to arrange for taxies

Positive reviews

  • Service, position, ambience luxury food
  • Beautiful surroundings and interior. Staff were all so friendly and made you feel very at home.
  • Hotel is absolutely beautiful overlooking Lake Windermere The staff were amazing, so helpful and even gave us a room upgrade as we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. Had dinner in the restaurant which was delicious. Cannot fault anything!
  • WORST MISTAKE WE EVER MADE was that we didn’t stay longer. Incredible restored building with the most incredible staff, hospitality and bedrooms. It feels like Lake Como in the Lake District and the festive season made it all the more special. Within easy reach of all the quaint towns: Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside. The breakfast is amazing, the views captivating and the atmosphere feels nostalgic and warm.
  • Everything, absolutely stunning location.

Negative reviews

  • These are not things we didn’t like, but rather things for improvement to make it world class: 1) More halal options – there is a huge audience that isn’t entirely catered for and whilst the staff do their best to accommodate, additional options here would open up a new market 2) Afternoon tea whilst amazing should always be done on a tiered stand – it’s classical 3) Additional toiletries should be made available as standard in all bathrooms: dental kit, shaving kit etc 4) Consider extending room service and turndown hours – most people return to rooms in the evenings and there isn’t many options past 9pm if you are still hungry
  • Staff require training.
  • The staff are really friendly and helpul, but they need more of them. We had to wait 15 mins to get to our room and after a long journey I just wanted to settle. Breakfast service was really slow. The staff look frazzled so breakfast was not a relaxed affair. Our room's tea and milk were not refreshed automatically. The promised turn down service never happened.
  • The bed was not comfortable, way to hard. The food was terrible at both breakfast and dinner; we only ate dinner there one night; had to send both meals. Even the room service food was hardly adequate for a 5 star hotel!! They need a new chef!!
  • Everything was riiduliously expensive

  • Excellent lakeside location, friendly and helpful staff. Spacious and comfortable room. Hotel has lots of history and lovely grounds. Really enjoyed relaxing by the open fires.
  • All the staff were fantastic. Very helpful, attentive & friendly.
  • Location and ambience amazing… staff were wonderful at all times… the food was of the highest standard… breakfast the best I’ve tasted for as long as I recall…

Negative reviews

  • A lift will be good
  • They do not have a spa
  • Food only available in Bistro mid week small location to eat dinner Average & Expensive Bistro meals with unexciting menu No vegetables with main course Bistro lets down other fine features of hotel .we would have expected fine dining.Breakfast excellent in nice room overlooking the lake -staff friendly and obliging Chef appears to play small role needs a Michelin starred chef Within 2 weeks of our visit offer over internet for £150 less than we paid! Just a bit galling COULD BE BETTER IN SERVING more stylish FOOD AT DINNER not a bistro
  • Here's the translation of the provided text into English: — The hotel location is beautiful, the room is clean, but there is no air conditioning, and the weather was very hot. The food options are very limited and bad, and their prices are high. The hotel staff are not welcoming except for one person from Romania who was smiling and friendly. The hotel manager is not suitable to be a manager; he is very racist and not smiling. We had an incident where my wife and I ordered a chicken sandwich, and the chicken was undercooked and raw with a very bad smell, and the bread was dry and hard, not suitable for eating. We couldn't eat it and asked the hotel to return it, but the manager refused and said, "I ate it and it tasted good!!" This is not the behavior of a hotel manager. We were forced to pay the bill even though we didn't eat it. I do not recommend visiting this hotel; the price is high, and the services and staff are unfriendly.
  • Hot tub and gas fire went off too early and I feel it was overpriced.

Positive reviews

  • Suite with its own Spa overlooking the lake was beautiful
  • Garden suite was superb plenty of room and quality furnishings plus bonus of use of a sauna, reception staff to waiting and ground staff were fantastic and helpful
  • Dinner at source was amazing, as was the spa. Emily on the front desk could not do enough to help you.
  • Beautiful location. Superb staff. Felt at home.
  • The room was beautiful – the attention to detail was perfect, providing locally made, handcrafted products. The room was clean and had everything we required. The food was at an elite level – we ate at Spice which was next level amazing. The breakfast was one I have thought about loads since – just delicious!

Negative reviews

  • Only the shower head which broke
  • You need to book reservations in the two restaurants well in advance of arriving but my fault really for that.
  • If you stay in the main house, the hotel itself lacks the 5 star feel you might expect for the value. I’d recommend anyone the spa and restaurant, but would just recommend to stay elsewhere and visit for the day. It’s nice and comfortable, but not good value for money.
  • Staff leave you waiting at the bar
  • Some aspects of the finish in the room were not what I'd expect considering the price. An example is the broken lever for the louvre blinds above the door. Despite notifying the staff and outlining my wife's photosensitivity, no-one came to fix it. I instead had to stand precariously on the arm of the chair to manually close.

Positive reviews

  • The staff were absolutely impeccable, friendly, courteous and kind. Our evening meal delicious, interesting
  • We had a lovely weekend. The food was superb. Probably better than you would get further north in the Lake District. A Good place to stay for the Lakes! And the staff were lovely!
  • The atmosphere of the building and the room was very cosy. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. Lovely and clean.
  • The Inn was very warm on a bitterly cold evening. We received a nice welcome and were shown to a lovely room, very comfortable and nicely furnished and decorated. We love coming here, even if it's just to sit on the settee in front of the fire in the lounge. We like it's situation and location as it's far enough away from the busier spots in the lakes, the roads are narrow which means you need to be quite determined to get here. Perhaps not so good for your business but adds a degree of exclusivity that we like. The beds were very comfortable and the Cumbrian breakfast was very tasty and filling.
  • The complimentary afternoon tea with warm scones was an unexpected delight. We went on a walk around the locality. The countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and our dinner could have easily outshine many a top 5*London restaurant.

Negative reviews

  • Kept waiting for the room to be ready, check late enough at 3pm but wasn't able to get in until 3.20pm
  • The evening menu is aimed at a more exclusive level and the prices reflect this, perhaps it's because I'm a steak n ale man! My loin of land was perfectly cooked of course, I'm glad I opted for chips to fill the plate somewhat. It was a nice treat however, my wife prefers plainer cooking and settled for the soup, followed by the cheeseboard.
  • Bed in Peake room was too soft but for one night stay was ok
  • Shower was slightly cramped for the size of the bathroom (Heelis room).
  • Lighting in bathroom poor, no light over sink / mirror. No heating in bathroom but not very cold in September. Bed lumpy and pillows inadequate. No space to put items down and sit in front of mirror in bedroom. Tricky when using contact lenses.

Positive reviews

  • Thought the front house staff went above and beyond.. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay..
  • Beautiful property. Lovely rood with great ambience in the bar and restaurant. Breakfast was yummy too!
  • The staff at this hotel were first class and made us feel very welcome. We were offered an upgrade on arrival which we gratefully accepted. The bar has a first class range of drinks at very competitive prices.
  • Excellent location Lovely meal the first night and superb breakfast choice Exceptional standard of cleanliness and friendly professional staff.
  • Everything about this hotel was class and luxury. Private parking was a bonus and the breakfast amazing.

Negative reviews

  • Hot tub slightly exposed to nearby properties but not a big issue
  • There is nowhere to put anything in the shower, so if you have say shower gel and shampoo you need to put them on the tray and bend up and down to swap. This could be difficult for older guests. The bathroom also became extremely hot. Potentially a stronger extractor is needed. These are very minor points however and wouldn't stop us from returning.
  • The bar shut early and wasn’t very busy.
  • No staff No receptionist We had to carry our bags to our rooms ourselves Bar is open but no staff to attend to us
  • Ridiculously shaped bathroom and inappropriate bath Very poor dining experience for its cost. Man in jeans taking our order and serving our meal. Look as though just been working on his car. Absurd. The tables werent even laid up. Drinks in bar sloppily prepared and served by same man. Deserve our money back. Good either wasn’t up to much.

  • Noise from apartment above
  • A coffee machine of some sort would’ve been nice for a morning coffee
  • Television wasn't easy to use couldn't find normal TV. Could hear noise of people moving about upstairs around 3 in the morning
  • There was a strange noise throughout the night, could have been a boiler but I think I’m just a light sleeper and it kept me awake some of the night

  • Very clean, beautiful stay, cant wait to be back next month!
  • Location and the hot tubs, fabulous breakfast and really comfy bed

Negative reviews

  • Whilst the staff were accommodating and tried everything they could, we had little to no signal in our room as well as the WiFi. This meant we couldn’t use the TV properly or use our phones to watch something on there.
  • Lack of fridge in room as medication needed chilling and wine cooler wasn’t adequate. Also speakers above hottub would be advantageous as tv couldn’t be herd from hottub
  • Extremely expensive for what it is/what you get, didn't have much hot water on the second day of our stay.
  • We did not appreciate being knocked out of bed by one of the staff as the room next door gave them the wrong room number to put their sauna on at 10pm. The staff were very apologetic the following day.
  • Our coffee machine wasn't working apart from that everything was good
