- Room and bar
- Everything about that place is to please your senses. Room decor, lights, tastefull details, comfortable bed, supernice staff, very good breakfast served in a beautiful space, view. The location is just epic. Loved it!
- Very clean, very modern with all the amenities you need
- Very friendly staff and extremely helpful!
- The room was fantastic. It was so clean and beautifully decorated. We stayed in a cave room that had cisterns below with a floss floor which was so unique. The hotel was in a good location and we were able to walk to many attractions.
Negative reviews
- That we only stayed 2 nights.
- Just missing a swimming pool.
- If you do get room which is wholly in a cave you might get allergies, some members of my family did. Hosts did great to accommodate us to another room!
- Reception was very snobby, didn’t explain the room enough with the high tec components. Room smells of mildew. Water leaked in corner soaking our shoes and bags. Towels didn’t dry. My wife got sick after breakfast for 2 days throwing up 🤮.
- The breakfast might be a bit more diverse. The selection of TV channels is a bit limited. The TV did not allow screen mirroring or using YouTube.

- Great location with panoramic view of the Sassi with excellent service. Relatively easy access going by taxi or private transfer. Unique experience in the cave rooms which are clean and comfortable. Excellent breakfast with a great view.
- Best location in the city. Room had an ample space. Staff were incredibly helpful and nice.
- Amazing stay here and did not want to leave! Lovely welcome on arrival explaining the hotel, the local area and showing us our former family home called ‘Pignattid’. The room was large, beautifully furnished and tranquil due to the natural soundproofing. A stylish bathroom and comfortable bed. Breakfast was fantastic with a tasty self-serve buffet all beautifully laid out in the bistro on-site. The view across the valley is fantastic and the hotel is an easy 15-minute walk from the railway station (albeit with lots of cobbles and some steps). The staff of the hotel and bistro were exceptionally helpful, friendly and personable. We spent half an hour chatting to Valentina in Reception after arriving back from our walk and Cristina organised our private tour with Alessio (recommended) and was quick to arrive when the safe got temporarily stuck. Thank you!
- Beautiful, best view of Matera
- Amazing room , and bathroom Really felt like sleeping in a museum and being suspended in history , everything was incredible .
Negative reviews
- The shower sprayed way beyond the area in the shower and had to put towels to damn it up
- Difficult to find hotel walking from garage.
- Would have been a 10 but our shower leaked over floor quite badly.
- battery chargers don't work
- – the reception area (including lift) is closed at night/early morning, so it means you need to find the back entrance to the hotel to come/leave. Not easy in the dark or with luggage.

- The location itself is AMAZING! A former mill, converted into a complex with hotel, indoor and outdoor swiming pools, restaurants, bars, conference rooms and generous common spaces. The personnel was so kind and supporting that make us to feal as the most important guests, ever. Cleaning on the daily bases, with a professional approach. Small but important gestures of courtesy (each day, water still and sparkling, coffee, tea, were refill, free of charge). Large parking facility, included in the price. Good cuisine, a maximum grade to the Chef. We strongly believe is the best place to stay, in Matera.
- We had a wonderful stay at this fabulous hotel. The location is central, the hotel rooms are spacious, the breakfast is delicious and the pool area is brilliant. We were privileged to be upgraded to a beautiful suite during our stay. There was a problem with our room rate between different on duty reception staff and booking.com but the reception staff sorted the issue with no problem. Great customer service!!! Our stay at this hotel was exceptional We will be back for sure! Thank you!
- The onsite private spa and free parking facility.
- Everything about this place is class from the friendly staff to the rooms to the restaurant- just superb.
- The pool area is stunning, we loved lounging by the pool after a busy day of walking round Matera. The rooms were also lovely and clean and the breakfast that was included was excellent.
Negative reviews
- Should be triple glazed window, bit noisy.
- Nothing, it was such a lovely stay. I’d just flag to people who might not like walking that is does take around 25 minutes to get into the centre of Matera but we didn’t mind the walk, plus it was worth it to have the pool.
- Close to a bit noisy stream, and Near the railroad !
- It is a good 20 min walk into the edge of the historic town. When its very hot thats a lot and felt the hotel could have done more to arrange a good price with taxis. We got one and it cost 20 euros for a 7 min drive. It feels like a conference centre with lots of open spaces ready for a convention, wedding or party. So lacking a bit of soul or history. It has very mixed architecture and furniture that is old and then some which looks like it should be in a nightclub which feels odd. Artwork is mixed some really amazing pieces and then pictures that are made up of pieces of wallpaper in a frame which look like they were made to just fill space. It feels like whoever was the designer could not decide what they wanted. I think it could be an amazing hotel if the interior was rethought.
- Le bruit du train est récurrent de 5H40 à23H30 pour quelqu'un qui a le sommeil léger. Dommage pour un hôtel de ce standing.

- It was a little treasure in old town. We loved everything about it. The view from our balcony was breathtaking and the pool was amazing. Fabulous breakfast and really helpful staff. A luxe hotel was not what we expected and it exceeded our epectations in every way
- A lovely and quaint property. I enjoyed it very much. Gorgeous view overlooking the town and pocket views of the ocean beyond. The room that I had was small, but very comfortable. They have a nice pool outside. Incredibly friendly staff. Highly recommended!
- Old fashioned values and service, nothing was too much trouble. Excellent polite staff. Would highly recommend. Fantastic location. They unloaded our car and parked it in their private car park. Collected our bags and loaded into our car when we left. Spectacular views. Room was immaculate and clean. 5 stars for this hotel. Breakfast was perfect and plentiful. We didnt haveva kettle in our room so they supplied one for us. Loved our stay.
- A stunning setting and a characterful hotel in a lovely little town. The bar and pool area had great views. The rooms were clean and comfortable with phone, safe, plenty of space for clothes, nice toiletries etc. The staff were great: friendly and helpful.
- The views were spectacular. Great location to shops and restaurants close by. The apartment itself was excellent, clean and very spacious. Hosts were welcoming and very accommodating, looking forward to visiting again soon.
Negative reviews
- It was not a problem for us but there are a lot of stairs in the property and to go down to the town. The staff were super helpful about carrying bags but it would not suit anyone who struggles with stairs. There was also not a lot of information provided about the hotel services: we discovered a fitness suite and that you could get a cooked breakfast but were not told about these. It is a pity that they do not serve dinner as often we did not feel like going out again after a day exploring.
- No coffee/ tea making facilities in room
- Pool was too cold, breakfast average
- Would have been good to have a heads up on where the parking was located – only a short walk from hotel, but located below hotel and with a late night arrival we missed it – the usual tight, winding roads made getting back to the parking lot a bit of an adventure. Great there is parking – just a heads up on how to access it directly would have been helpfu.
- Sorry but have to agree with others, the beds were very hard.

- Sarah was excellent Location was perfect Very clean
- Davide from the staff was amazing. He was super kind, helped with all requests, including helping with booking parking before our arrival. He showed us the highlights of the city and recommended great restaurants. We would come back just for Davide. The location of the hotel is also fantastic. Good surprise, we also got a free room upgrade so we could enjoy the real experience of sleeping in a cave. Breakfast was also very good, with eggs, bruschetta, good bread, fruits, yoghurt, etc.
- The room was beautifully decorated, well lit and warm, making it a luxurious stay. The staff were friendly, welcoming and very helpful. They booked a restaurant for us for dinner and highlighted areas of interest on a map for us.
Negative reviews
- Niente
- The room was a bit cold and we were not able to change the temperature. The room was also lacking spaces for storage. Finally the 2 ladies taking care of breakfast seemed very annoyed. A smile would have been appreciated
- The glass bathroom wall/door left little privacy! Breakfast was a bit basic
- No wifi in room 16
- we did not like the breakfast. It was not diverse. Not too many things to choose. One of the ladies, which was serving the breakfast, was very unpolite to us.

- The location is perfect, the hotel deserve all its 4 stars. The staff was really nice and polite. I arrived at night at the hotel but still, they made me the favour to keep restaurant open for me, really professional!
- We had an excellent stay at the Hotel Castegneto. The suite we stayed in was spacious, elegantly furnished and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and professional. A big thank you to the Hotel Manager (Severio) who was exceptionally helpful and ensured we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay!
Negative reviews
- Access to the hotel grounds requires a boom to open – have to get out of your car to press the button for reception to open the boom. When you arrive/return with nobody at reception, you may wait a while and press the button numerous times to attract attention so that the boom can be opened.
- Pool was closed, food was only pizza after 19.30, nothing to do in the area.

Last but not least, die Küche ist sehr zu empfehlen. Zum Abendessen werden begleitend verschiedene Weine aus der Basilikata angeboten. Und das Frühstück wurde nach unseren Vorlieben zubereitet. Wir haben uns rundum wohl gefühlt!
